Bioindustrial Innovation Canada Welcomes Kurtis Tamming as Newest Biotechnology Intern

BIC

NEWS RELEASE

SARNIA, Ontario – Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) supports the development of the next generation of highly qualified persons who will lead Canadian innovation in clean, green and sustainable chemistry. BIC works with industry to understand their needs and endeavour to match youth to jobs. Funding of these experiential learning opportunities, assisting in recruitment and working with educational institutions to adapt curriculum to industry needs is paramount to advancing Canada’s innovation agenda.

Sandy Marshall, Executive Director BIC, welcomed Kurtis Tamming, to complete an eight-month internship at BIC’s home office at The Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park.

Kurtis has recently completed the third year of his Bachelor of Technology program at McMaster University specializing in Biotechnology. This program is focused on giving students both science and business training to develop an expertise in the commercialization of biotechnology innovations. His recent lab experience working with bioreactors and proper sterile lab procedures making ethanol from sugar, has made him ideal candidate for an internship at BIC.

Upon his graduation (December 2019) he will graduate with his Bachelor of Technology from McMaster University with an Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology and a Business Management Certificate, both from Mohawk College.

"This internship gives me an invaluable opportunity to both explore the new and emerging biotechnology companies and to get hands on experience in this ever-expanding field," said Kurtis.

During his time here, Kurtis will work on applied research projects within Lambton College and conduct technical and due diligence activities with BIC’s COMM SCI investments and projects.

“BIC is very proud of its role to provide students with real business experience and industrial exposure. Gaining this experience is critical for students to find good jobs and transition successfully into the business world,” said Sandy.
