SARNIA, Ontario – As a not-for-profit organization, Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) has the goal to help Ontario and Canada become globally recognized leaders in the field of sustainable technologies. Canada’s forestry and agricultural waste offers an abundant source of biomass to support the bio-economy, allowing our nation to create a sustainable hybrid chemistry cluster and become a global leader in the burgeoning bio-economy.
BIC plays a key role supporting the development of the Sarnia-Lambton cluster. With a vision to create jobs and generate economic value sustainably for Canada, BIC is providing critical strategic investment, advice and services to business developers of clean, green and sustainable technologies.
In support of this vision, BIC recently hired two Junior Project Engineers-in-training, David Carey and Zachary Gray.

In this position they will be working exclusively on client projects within BIC’s Centre for Commercialization of Sustainable Chemistry Innovation (COMM SCI). COMM SCI is a hub for commercialization of bio-based and sustainable chemistry-based innovation, providing business and technical support to participating small and medium sized entities (SME). COMM SCI services provide participating companies advice, services and access to risk capital to remove barriers to commercialization enabling technology demonstration and scale-up.
“We are excited to bring these two recent graduates on board as we continue to grow the bioeconomy in Southern Ontario. Part of BIC’s mandate is to develop highly qualified professionals in the bioindustrial sector, and this serves as an ideal opportunity to do so by providing experience and a launching point for their careers,” quoted Sandy Marshall, Executive Director of BIC.
David Carey:
Born and raised in Sarnia, David went to high school at St. Patrick's Catholic Secondary School. Living in Sarnia is what introduced David to the petrochemical and biochemical industries, and these captured his interest and lead to his decision to go to the University of Ottawa for Chemical Engineering. David studied at a nationally accredited engineering program that allowed for both hands-on engineering experience and the academic knowledge necessary for his career path. David graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor's of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering.
David quoted, “as a Junior Project Engineer-in-training, my experience managing projects in university, as well as small scale improvement projects at Lambton Centre Summer Camp, where I had my summer employment throughout university, will help me as I become a part of BIC. I am very excited to be a part of the growth of Sarnia-Lambton, and to join a company committed to the development of sustainable technology.”
Zachary Gray:
Zachary was born and raised in London, ON and is a third generation Engineering graduate. He completed his studies in Chemical Engineering & Biosciences at McMaster University this past June. During his time as an undergraduate student, he worked in an interfacial engineering lab, taught a range of techniques in data analysis as a part of the Student Success Center, and worked with various other clubs on campus, such as MacServe and the Chemical Engineering Club.
Zachary is excited to return to Sarnia as a Junior Project Engineer with BIC, after having completed a 16-month internship with one of the oil refineries in town between his penultimate and final years of studies. When Zachary was in Sarnia last, he pursued numerous volunteer ventures including the United Way, Junior Achievement, and helping with Bluewater Health.
