Bioindustrial Innovation Canada

NEWS RELEASE

SARNIA, Ontario - BIC supports the development of the next generation of highly qualified persons who will lead Canadian innovation. BIC works with industry to understand their needs and endeavor to match youth to jobs. Funding of these experiential learning opportunities, assisting in recruitment and working with educational institutions to adapt curriculum to industry needs is paramount to advancing Canada’s innovation agenda.

Recently, Sandy Marshall, Executive Director of BIC, welcomed PhD student, Emmanuel Ogunsona to complete a 3-month internship at BIC in SarnIa, Ontario.

Emmanuel Ogunsona is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph in Biological Engineering under the leadership of Dr. Amar Mohanty. He received his BSc (2006) and MSc (2007) both from the University of North Texas, Denton in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, respectively. He has worked as a Technical Support/Laboratory Manager at the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja with vast experience in research and development of bio-based materials. In conjunction with other researchers, he has developed and patented biomaterial with potential for applications in the automotive industry.

“This internship at BIC has been very beneficial. It gives me a valuable introduction to the operations and protocols that must be put in place before research and development can take place. At the end of my internship I will have a much better understanding of the correct policies that an industrial biotechnology company must have to be successful,” stated Ogunsona.

At BIC, Emmanuel is working on a Life Cycle Assessment of an industrial biomass conversion to biofuel technology. He has also been involved with due diligence assessments of startup businesses and is gaining experience in the requirements necessary for success.

“BIC is very proud of its role to provide students with real business experience and industrial exposure. Gaining this experience is critical for students to find good jobs and transition successfully into the business world,” Marshall said.

BIC will continue to work with Colleges and Universities to commercialize their innovations, and leverage their capabilities to optimize technologies through applied research activities and to accelerate commercialization of emerging technology companies.
